Assistant/Associate Professor in Game Development

The IT University of Copenhagen invites applications for an assistant/associate professor position in Games,
starting summer 2018 or soon thereafter.
Applicants should complement ITU´s existing competence in games research and teaching with knowledge about technical aspects of playful experiences and games. They should be motivated by problems of practical interest,
while seeking to make use of, and create, theoretical insight.

Applicants that have a proven track record in contributing to game-related products or to collaborations across disciplines are especially encouraged to apply. The position includes teaching and research in game technology-related areas.


The ideal candidate

The ideal candidate should have a strong track record in the following areas:

  • Development of playful experiences and technologies, e.g. game development or game engine development
  • One or more contemporary or emerging game and play technologies, e.g. virtual, augmented or mixed reality,
    computer graphics, artificial intelligence, procedural content generation, or other relevant technology areas.

In addition the ideal candidate should be able to show:

  • Publications of research at a high international level in well-respected peer reviewed venues
  • Ability and willingness to teach using industrially relevant software tools and methods,
    and drawing on practical examples.
  • Documentation for having developed and conducted undergraduate and/or graduate level teaching that is well
    received by students
  • A record of contributing to the goals of the institutions/projects in which he/she has worked
  • For the associate professor level: Experience with supervising graduate and/or doctoral students.
The successful candidate holds a doctorate in computer science, or similar, or in a field related to game technology.


Job description
The candidate is expected to develop, supervise, and contribute to research and education related to the above listed areas and exchange knowledge with the international research community, the games industry and the public.

Applicants at the associate professor level will be expected to attract external research funding and be capable of,
and prepared to, supervise PhD students. Moreover, the associate professor is expected to build external collaborations in joint research projects with partners outside and within academia.


General information
The IT University of Copenhagen (ITU) is a teaching and research-based tertiary institution concerned with information technology (IT) and the opportunities it offers. The IT University has more than 70 full-time academics. Research and teaching in information technology span all academic activities which involve computers including computer science, information and media sciences, humanities and social sciences, business impact and the commercialisation of IT.

Appointment and salary will be in accordance with the Ministry of Finance´s agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC).


The application must be in English and must include:
  • A motivated application, including a cogent argument for how qualified you are for the position and brief statements of research and teaching plans
  • A full CV, including name, address, phone number, e-mail, previous and present employment and academic background
  • Documentation of academic degrees (copy of degree certificates etc.)
  • Copies of 3-5 publications relevant to the position.
  • A numbered list of publications. The enclosed publications should be marked with an asterisk (*)
  • Documentation of pedagogical experience and teaching record within one or more of the teaching areas listed for the position
  • For the position as associate professor: documentation of both a) received observation and feedback on teaching, b) pedagogical training courses as a teacher, c) a formal written assessment of teaching competence and
    d) a teaching record within one or more of the teaching areas listed for the position.


Applications without the above-mentioned documents will not be assessed.
The applicant will be assessed according to the Appointment Order from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation of 25 April 2008.

The IT University may use shortlisting in connection to the recruitment process. In case of shortlisting, the chairman of the hiring committee selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the hiring committee after the application deadline. Alle applicants are notified whether their application has been passed for assessment. The shortlisting of candidates for assessment is based on the criteria in the job posting.
